Student Guide to Sheffield Music Studios

Posted on January 18, 2024

Let’s be real, if you’re reading this, you’re probably an aspiring musician. You are gonna wanna know where best to record your music. Well, do I have the article for you! Here are (some) of the best Sheffield music studios.

Tesla Studios

Tesla Studios is situated in Heeley, just over a mile out of Sheffield City centre, in a former Victorian industrial workshop. Specialising Album, EP and Single projects, this music studio have an impressive array of analogue equipment, a great sounding live room and a comfortable, characterful control room. Genuinely, seems almost too cosy to be a studio. It should be a lovely little Victorian cottage. WaterBear is lucky enough to have a partnership with Tesla Studios, so our students are able to record there as part of their learning. How great is that?

You can find out more about Tesla Studios here.

Yellow Arch Studios

Wow, Yellow Arch appears on two of our Sheffield student music guide articles? That’s right, that’s how good of a venue it is. Apart from hosting some incredible gigs, Yellow Arch has also been the home for many recording artists. Arctic Monkeys? Recorded there. PULP? Recorded there. Kylie Minogue? Recorded there. I know right, Kylie Minogue? That is just how good the recording facilities are at Yellow Arch. Yellow Arch is genuinely historic, in all sense of the word, and is one of the best music studios in Sheffield.

2fly Studios

Now if we are talking historic, 2fly takes the cake. Set up in 2001, originally in a concrete shack (seriously), 2fly has hosted all manner of storied Sheffield bands, with its most famous alumnus being Arctic Monkeys, who recorded their first ever demo at 2fly studios. 2fly is in at Harland Works, near Bramall Lane, so it’s easy to get too. Most bookings come from younger bands wanting to record demos or self-funded projects, with the typical session offering just two days to track and mix four tracks. This isn't a glamorous, money-no object studio, but a hard-working grassroots facility producing great results, all spurred on by the owner’s, Alan Smyth, infectious enthusiasm.

You can find out more about 2fly Studios here.

Steelworks Studios

The world-famous Steelworks studios. Steelworks is genuinely a melting pot of gritty Sheffield doggedness and creative brilliance. Having hosted some of music’s greatest talents like Jarvis Cocker, Aretha Franklin, the Spice Girls, Steelworks has transcended its size and has become a real heavyweight studio. The base of Eliot Kennedy, who has won both a Grammy Award and an Ivor Novello award, as well as having been nominated for a Golden Globe and a Critics Choice award, both the staff and the equipment at Steelworks are geared towards helping any aspiring musician create the best music possible.

You can find out more about Steelworks Studios here.

Sheffield is blessed with countless studios, with these examples being just a sample of what is on offer in the Steel City. Any aspiring musician would find an amazing home in Sheffield, with the wide option of studios representing the creative opportunities available in the city.
