Just like our Brighton college, WaterBear Sheffield is home to a combination of fantastic vintage gear and state-of-the-art digital A/V equipment. Drummers learn on acoustic kits, guitarists and bassists plug into their own amps, and music producers and electronic artists will work with the latest tech and equipment.
Located right in the heart of the Cultural Industries Quarter, our Sheffield HQ stands on the old site of the famous Sheffield superclub, Gatecrasher. The building is a mirror of our Brighton HQ building, and houses 2 mac suites, general purpose teaching spaces and mentoring rooms done out in our unique WaterBear style. It’s also where we run our open day events.
As well as our own college building, we believe in the importance of using other established Sheffield venues for teaching and learning too. This is our city-wide campus approach, and is a great way to grow your network and be working with people who are known and busy in the local scene. Here are some examples of local Sheffield venues our students may be working at on a regular basis:
Sidney and Matilda is a vibrant independent music venue founded in 2018 by artist/curator/producer Al Daw. Housed in a former paper factory on the edge of the cultural industries quarter and just 2 minutes’ walk from WaterBear Sheffield HQ, it’s 2 separate live spaces and bar area make it a great venue for hosting lots of varied events including live music, club nights, comedy and performance events.
Tesla Studios is located just over a mile out of Sheffield city centre in a former Victorian industrial workshop. Owned and operated by producer/mix engineer David Glover and producer/engineer Mathew Doxey, Tesla has recorded many artists including Self Esteem, Charles Watson, Reverend and the Makers, and Katie Harkin. The studio is equipped with state-of-the-art analogue and digital recording equipment, a huge range of vintage and modern backline equipment and a fantastic sounding live room.
Practice Sheffield, a rehearsal studio based a short walk from the WaterBear Sheffield HQ, offers a variety of inviting and inspirational spaces for you to practice and create in. There’s also a performance space, recording studio and a licensed bar, so it’s great place to hang and meet other musicians from the local scene.
Please note: The use of outside venues is subject to change. We choose venues based on the positive impact we believe they will have on student experience and review the facilities we use on a regular basis, taking into account student feedback. If working with a particular venue is important to you, please contact the Programme Manager to discuss.
