Joe Newman

Tutor and Mentor

After releasing his debut album on Tru-Thoughts in 2015, J-Felix's P Funk, Soul, and Boogie laced music quickly made waves with multiple plays by Huey Morgan, Nemone, Mary Anne Hobbs, and Don Letts on BBC6Music, Jazzanova on Nova Fm, FIP radio and snapped up on Julie Adenuga's debut show on Apple's Beats1. He has since released a string of EP's both on Tru-Thoughts and the more Disco/ Boogie focussed Midnight Riot to critical acclaim as well as remixing the likes of Hot 8 Brass Band, Werkha, Wrongtom, and The Ragga Twins, Paper Tiger, Lakuta and Amp Fiddler.

His sophomore album, Whole Again Hooligan, released in 2020 received support across BBC6/ 1EXTRA and RADIO1 and led to a live session at Gille's Petersons Worldwide FM with collaborator, Andrew Ashong and a string of headline shows and DJ appearances. J-Felix is also an in-demand guitarist both on stage and in the studio having toured globally with Alice Russell and Swindle and played on releases from Mahalia and Kojey Radical.

Production credits include Harleighblu, Abi Flynn, Ibibio Sound Machine, and Mad Yella. Having supported sold-out shows with Soul ll Soul, George Clinton (Parliament Funkadelic), and Hot 8 Brass band, his live full live show is a dynamic take on his studio work. J-Felix remains a sought-after DJ as well after holding down residencies in London, warming up for Gilles Peterson as part of his Patterns residency in Brighton, and playing at Soundwave, Glastonbury, Nova Batida, and Love Supreme to name a few of the many festival appearances.
