We are delighted to be working with the team behind @randrcircus to bring our WaterBear students some fantastic opportunities this summer!

Rock N Roll Circus takes place in Don Valley Bowl at the end of August, and will feature the likes of Richard Hawley, Becky Hill, Milburn, and a host of other fantastic acts. One of the best live events in Sheffield, Rock N Roll Circus is guaranteed to be a highlight of the summer.

The team behind the event are offering the chance for one WaterBear student to work as an Events Marketing Intern. This role will be for someone with an interest in live music and events. The chosen candidate will come on-board immediately with their team, helping to sell tickets and raise awareness for Rock N Roll Circus!

We’re really excited to be announcing our MA Open Evening that is taking place at our WaterBear Sheffield campus on 30th May.

Taking place from 6pm until 8pm, the open evening will feature performances from two of our MA students, Logan and Vilde, and it’ll be a fantastic opportunity for any prospective student to chat with WaterBear staff and WaterBear MA students about what our Masters courses offer, and the day-to-day experience of an MA student.

There will be wine and cheese on offer, too!

@corpsheffield are offering one student the chance to work as a Live Events Assistant as part of a summer internship!

Corp are looking for a passionate, hard-working individual to support their live events manager with the ever-growing pace and size of the venue’s live music programming.

The suitable candidate must be completely confident and comfortable with both written and verbal communication, have an understanding around the live music industry and, most importantly, a love for live music.

The role will include work on both evenings and weekends, and the candidate must have good flexibility surrounding working availability. Candidates must be prepared to work in an environment with sound levels over 86db, as well as strobe effects. Candidates should also be comfortable in clouds.

@gettogetherfest, one of Sheffield’s newest and most exciting festivals, returns for its fourth year, and we have some fantastic volunteer roles for our WaterBear students!

Located across multiple venues in Kelham Island, Get Together represents one of the best festivals to see both up-and-coming artists and old favourites, across a variety of genres. This year it’s headlined by CMAT, and also features Super Furry Animal’s Gruff Rhys, The Bug Club, and Porij.

Get Together also plays host to a variety of independent food and drink vendors, with Sheffield’s very own Peddler Market curating a selection of the best street food available in the country.

Get Together have nine student roles available for volunteering, across different aspects of the festival. From engineering roles to crew, there are a variety of different opportunities available for students who are interested!

@guitarworldmagazine, the world’s biggest guitar magazine and website, is looking to add to its freelance pool of writers, and they’re giving WaterBear students the chance to pitch!

Publishing since 1980, Guitar World has interviewed the likes of Ozzy Osbourne, Johnny Marr, Kurt Cobain, and even Prince! A hugely important magazine in the world of music journalism, this is an incredible opportunity for anyone interested in writing about music.

For those interested, Guitar World are looking for you to pitch three articles, each around 100 words.

The first two articles should each be covering a guitar player that Guitar World has not covered before.

The third article is just an opinion or experimental piece.

Make sure to read the site and check out examples of previously written articles for Guitar World before you start your own pieces!

What is the philosophy of the brand-new MA Songwriting course?

Our MA Songwriting course is all about coming at songwriting from different angles and different methodologies. Working with different people, getting different influences, and building your skillset.

Being open-minded and creative. Thinking like a professional writer. That’s what this course is about.

Within a collaborative community of like-minded artists, you`ll attend in-house bootcamps, as well as our immersive WaterBear songwriting residential experience, and participate in weekly songwriting sessions. You`ll receive one-to-one mentoring and teaching from accomplished music industry experts, both in class and via a virtual learning environment.

Throughout the course, you’ll strengthen your commercial knowledge, explore multiple income streams, develop your brand, build your repertoire, and finally, realise your artistic vision through a major commercial project.

We`re taking a creative approach with this MA, and it`s all going to be driven by you and your creative output. The sky really is the limit; you could be one song away from changing the world.

On Tuesday, we had our Brighton end-of-year party!

The party saw @milkshakernb, the UK’s best live 90s/00s RnB collective, headline, and at one point they even got one of our Brighton students, James Cairns (@jamescairns.x), up on stage to play drums!

Everyone seemed to have a tremendous amount of fun, and it`s safe to say this was the perfect way to end our on-site Brighton student`s academic year!

A big thank you to Milkshake and James Cairns for performing, and also to all of you who came to the party!

@contained_sheffield is a brand-new outdoor dance festival located in the heart of Sheffield’s very own Kelham Island, and we have some fantastic opportunities for our WaterBear Students!

Taking place Sunday, 5th May, during the Bank Holiday Weekend, at @steelyard_sheffield in Kelham, which is Sheffield’s biggest outdoor multi-purpose event space created from shipping containers. Contained Festival is taking over this unique space and creating a self-described rave haven.

With 4 stages, over 40 DJs, live musicians, and some jaw-dropping production, this is set to be an amazing event. And Contained has some fantastic opportunities for our students!

We are opening our Summer Funding programme to help WaterBear artists take their music to the next level!

This funding opportunity is open to all WaterBear students and can be used to help record, release, and promote your music. We can help you find the right producer, studio, and musicians, and offer expert advice on release and promotion strategies.

The aim is to help you get ready for September, when new and returning students come back to the city. This is the time to grow your audience.

You are expected to make your own financial contributions to the project to go along with the WaterBear funding.

It is also expected that students who are interested will have already engaged with the Artist Development and Careers Team at WaterBear, so please email the Artist Development and Careers team if you need to arrange this.

The maximum funding amount will be £250.

Introducing our brand-new MA Songwriting course!

Designed for solo artists, songwriters, bands, and producers, this course is focused on creating high-quality, career-defining compositions.

This is a year-long, full-time course, starting in September 2024, to be studied either onsite in Brighton or online.

Bringing your unique skills and creative energy to the table, we’ll equip you with the knowledge and confidence to establish yourself as a professional songwriter in the creative sector. You’ll master core songwriting and composition methodologies, navigate the path from demo to master, refine your production skills, work with producers in professional studios, and generate income streams while developing your critical thinking and research skills to a postgraduate level.

Within a collaborative community of like-minded artists, you`ll attend in-house bootcamps, as well as our immersive WaterBear songwriting residential experience, and participate in weekly songwriting sessions. Sheffield’s biggest music festival, @tramlines, is back this July, and we have three amazing opportunities available to our students to work at the festival!

The three roles are:

👉Main Stage Assistant

👉Production Office Assistant

👉Second Stage Assistant

Whilst these roles are not paid, three meals a day will be provided for the duration of the work, and any expenses can be covered by a WaterBear bursary.

Successful applicants will be working from 25th July to the 29th July.

As an organisation Tramlines wants to offer equal and accessible opportunities and therefore for this role, they require no prior experience. However, they are looking for candidates who are enthusiastic for the role, have a keen eye for detail, and have a calm demeanour.

We are really excited to be announcing an opportunity for our students to work with the hugely successful On The Sly Audio Production!

They want students to help them produce various radio packages, audio packages, podcasts, and other music and sound design-related projects.

Any experience in using Pro Tools to produce music or audio projects would be useful, but On The Sly fully expect to coach and teach the chosen students to show them how to produce in a professional setting!

This opportunity will be located in Eastbourne, and the chosen students will need to be able to travel to Eastbourne. Students may be eligible for a WaterBear Bursary to cover travel.

Following an interview, chosen students will undertake 3-4 days of training (depending on availability) across one week at On the Sly’s studio. Anyone who progresses beyond the training to an acceptable standard will be added to On The Sly’s team of freelancer producers.

There will be no fee for the interview or training days, however any students who are chosen as freelancers will be paid for their time going forward.

On The Sly want their candidates to be self-motivated, keen to work & learn, happy to work with others, and trustworthy.
