The WaterBear x AudioActive Scholarship Award

WaterBear have partnered with AudioActive to create a brand-new scholarship award for emerging artists. AudioActive, is a non-profit music organisation that focus on creating social change by empowering young people through making music, enabling them to achieve their full potential.

Our partnership with AudioActive seeks to support their vision and to widen participation for young people who wish to develop their careers within the music industry through undergraduate study. The award covers tuition fees for 3 years of a BA (Hons) degree course at WaterBear Brighton.

The lucky recipient of the WaterBear x AudioActive Scholarship Award, selected by AudioActive is the well-deserved winner, Summer Rose. Through her involvement with AudioActive, Summer Rose received one-to-one support which has enabled her to start thinking about her future, given her confidence to follow her dreams and has been instrumental in her applying for university.

“We are absolutely delighted to offer a scholarship that is a collaboration between WaterBear and AudioActive. It is a total no brainer to offer this scholarship to Summer Rose, she is amazing.”

AUDIO ACTIVE

Summer Rose

“When I first got involved with AudioActive I was introduced to a mental health team, and they encouraged me to join mentoring. With the help of Jennie, a senior music mentor, I created a music event for young female and non-binary performers in Brighton, it was a fun event but took a lot of planning. I went to visit WaterBear and was offered a place to study BA (Hons) Professional Music Performance, following that AudioActive then gave me the scholarship opportunity. Getting the scholarship means a lot to me, it helped me realise that there are a lot of things that I can do. I came from a really low place in life to this and it just proves that if you work hard enough that you will achieve your goals.”

AudioActive

AudioActive, founded in 1999, is a non-profit music organisation with a strong community reaching across Sussex including hubs in Brighton and Worthing. Their focus is on creating social change by empowering young people through making music, enabling them to achieve their full potential. Alongside developing careers, their ethos of making music and changing lives, aids young people to become active members of society, and seeks to improve mental health, reduce school exclusion, improve attendance, reduce gender inequality and provide an outlet for self-expression.

WaterBear Careers Officer and former AudioActive Participant

Boudicca, songwriter, rapper and WaterBear Careers Officer discusses the opportunities AudioActive gave her. “Music means a lot to me; it’s about connecting with something bigger than myself. AudioActive encouraged me to share my experiences through writing lyrics, rapping, and performing which really helped me. It was eye opening as a lot of women came forward to say they had had a similar experience. AudioActive saved my life, jump started my music career, and I met a community of artists I otherwise would not have known who have really benefited me.”
