WaterBear are giving one of our musicians the opportunity to win a 1-1 with the one and only Chris Buck!

Chris has enjoyed success in the iTunes album rock charts with his new band Cardinal Black, and has been voted ‘Best New Guitarist’ and ‘Best Blues Guitarist’ in successive years by the readers of Guitarist Magazine

This is going to be an hour session to use for whatever you’d like, a 1-1 guitar lessons, a career chat, maybe just grabbing a coffee with this incredible guitarist.

WaterBear | The College of Music  is very excited to announce the 2019 Rob Chapman 52 Note Guitar Challenge Competition.

The competition is designed to showcase emerging guitar talent. Entrants are asked to jam over a backing track (see track below), but are limited to the most creative use of 52 notes only. Entrants need to upload a video to YouTube of them playing along with the backing track.

This competition is open to the whole planet, you can live anywhere and enter. The prize is a one off prototype Chapman ML1 Guitar, including hard case which will be shipped directly to the winner.

Note the deadline for entrants is Friday, June 14th, 2019 at 17:00 (UK time).

If you have any problems downloading the track email [email protected]


(1.) You must be playing live on video and we must be able to see your hands.

(2.) You can record using a simple camera phone.

(3.) You can use any number of notes up to 52.

(4.) You are allowed to bend to multiple notes from one picked note.

(5.) Chords count as one note.

(6.) Try to be as melodic as possible and consider your phrasing.

(7.) You can enter as many times as you like.

(8.) You must upload your video to YouTube.

(9.) Use this title in your video: WaterBear Backing Track Competition - Insert Your Name.

(10.) This competition ends on the 14th June 2019.

(11.) The winner will be picked by WaterBear and Rob Chapman.

(12.) The decision of the judges is final.
