This February, South Lanes Studios marks a significant milestone: five years of supporting and transforming the independent music scene. Founded in 2020 by Meg Carnie and Sam Clines, the studio has evolved from a modest basement space into a creative powerhouse, redefining artist development in Brighton.
At just 26, Meg Carnie, who recently received the AIM Music Entrepreneur of the Year 2024 award, has played a key role in the studio’s success. “When we started South Lanes, it was about creating a space where artists could thrive,” Carnie shares. “We set out to build a community that helps musicians turn their passion into lasting careers.”
From its beginnings, South Lanes Studios has maintained a clear purpose: to empower independent artists and producers by providing essential resources, mentorship, and unique opportunities. Today, it is celebrated for its artist-first philosophy, offering accessible studio options, flexible pay-as-you-go setups, and interest-free project financing.
A Future Built on Sustainability and Collaboration
In its fifth year, South Lanes Studios launched a Membership and Credit system, making professional studio access more flexible and affordable. This includes exclusive community perks such as networking events and discounted bookings. These initiatives reflect the studio’s mission to break down barriers for grassroots artists.
“Accessibility has always been at the heart of what we do,” Carnie explains. “That’s why we’ve prioritised creating spaces like Studio 7 – a ready-to-use production room made possible through support from Marshall Education and Brighton’s Shared Prosperity Fund.”
Looking forward, the studio aims to expand its impact with more community events, songwriting camps, and partnerships that bring fresh opportunities to Brighton’s independent music scene.
Inspiring the Next Generation
Beyond her work at South Lanes, Carnie teaches at WaterBear – The College of Music, where she mentors aspiring artists and entrepreneurs. “Teaching is one of the most fulfilling aspects of my work,” she says. “Helping students gain confidence and turn their ideas into something real is incredibly rewarding.”
Carnie also manages artists, including Jarki Monno, who has signed with Marshall Records and live agency Runway Artists. Reflecting on her role in artist management, she notes, “It’s a privilege to support artists as they grow and achieve what once felt like distant goals.”
Celebrating Achievements Together
The studio will host a 5th-anniversary celebration on February 1, 2025, inviting the community to reflect on its achievements and the artists it has championed. Tickets are free and open to all. Book your tickets here.
“We’re proud of what South Lanes has become,” Carnie says. “It’s a space where artists feel supported and inspired. This anniversary is a chance to celebrate how far we’ve come—and look ahead to what’s next.”
With its forward-thinking approach, passionate leadership, and dedication to independent music, South Lanes Studios continues to thrive as a hub for creativity and collaboration in Brighton and beyond.
